Fr. Tony was Leaving Cert Class of 1982. Our sympathies to his family and friends.

Michael Fitzpatrick:
It is with sadness we learn of the death of past pupil Michael (Dick) Fitzpatrick. Dick was Leaving Cert Class of 1981. Dick was cremated yesterday in Dardistown cemetery.

I am saddened to report the passing of Joe Gantly, Leaving Cert Class of 1963 and President of the Conference the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Fairview.
Joe was a great supporter of Joeys Alumni and last year arranged for his 1963 class mates to purchase the hand-made wooden model of the original ‘Joeys’ school building and present it to the school (for more details & photo scroll down on this page).

Appeal to help DONAL MC CANN (Joeys Class of ‘68)
Don McCann is one of three McCann brothers, who attended Joey’s during the 60’s and
early 70’s. They were: Oliver (class 63), Don (class 68) and Mick (class 71), who passed away
3 years ago.
All Don’s friends agree that he epitomizes loyalty, friendship and a great sense of humour.
Nothing was too much for Don and his wife, Aideen, when it came to great get-togethers
especially New Year’s Eve.
Don loves music, photography, video, travel are evident from the video he made for their
year’s 50th anniversary (shown at Joeys Annual Dinner in February 2018) link here.
Don, was diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this year and has recently been discharged
from hospital having stopped his treatment. The family decided that he would much rather
spend his time at home in Artane instead of in a nursing home.
Don will need significant carer support every day in order to stay at home. Unfortunately,
home nursing care in Dublin is both scarce and expensive. To help meet these extra costs
the family are holding a fundraising party on July 28th in Parnell’s GAA Club, Coolock, Dublin
5, where there will be entertainment for the children during the day followed by live music
and an auction. All funds raised on the day will be used exclusively towards the cost of home
care for Don. A lot of you have kindly asked how you can help and we have set up this page
in order for people who can’t come on the day but who wish to donate. Thank you for your
kindness and generosity.

Fred Crowe RIP
I am saddened to report the passing of Fred Crowe, Leaving Cert Class of 1968 and President of Joeys Alumni 1993 – 1996.
The committee of Joeys Alumni had decided to present Fred with the Joeys Alumni Community Service & Leadership Award at the Annual St. Joseph’s CBS Reunion Dinner in Clontarf Castle on Friday, 22nd February 2019. Fred was very pleased that we had decided to make this award, when we advised him last November, even though he knew that his illness made it unlikely he would make the event.
The Joeys Alumni Community Service Award is granted as a mark of recognition by past pupils of St. Joseph’s CBS, Fairview to past pupils, friends or staff of the school who have made an outstanding contribution to the betterment of communities at home or abroad through exceptional service, leadership, and accomplishments.
Fred was CEO of Nandri, founded in 1996 to help Dalit children in Tamil Nadu, India. Since then Nandri has helped to educate over 5,000 children. Nandri’s mission is to empower disadvantaged women in rural India through self-help groups, micro finance and child education support.
This is our first year to make such an award, which is initially based on nominations from committee members and in future years will be opened up to nominations from our contactable Alumni base.

Can Joey’s PPU help solve the mystery behind a local work of art?
Joe Gantly (Leaving Cert Class of 1963) is President of the Fairview conference of St. Vincent
de Paul. The conference is especially committed to helping people to remain in school and
then to continue to 3rd level education where possible. As we all know a good education is
an absolutely essential step to breaking the cycle of poverty.
The conference has recently been gifted with a stunning, hand-made wooden model of the
original ‘Joeys’ school building and with a challenging mystery: who is the L. Byrne who
created and signed this work of art in 1967?
The gift comes to SVP from the family of the late H.B. ‘Brian’ Dennis who was a pupil in the
Joeys, class of 1947.
It measures 48cm x 26cm x 16 cm, (19” x 10” x 6.5”) and is made entirely of matchsticks and
ice-pop sticks. It recreates the original Joeys building facing onto Marino Mart. The detailing
of doors, windows, external stairways, even the chimney-pots indicate that this is the work
of a very talented artist, most likely a past-pupil.
Professional estimates say that it took months to build.
The conference plans to auction this beautiful piece of local history to raise funds for its
work in the Fairview-Marino area, and hope that someone from Joeys Alumni may
remember L. Byrne and give us some more information about him and his time in Joeys.

Joey’s Alumni Golf Classic, Clontarf Golf Club, Friday, 22nd June 2018
Hi Fellow Alumni / Friend of Joeys CBS Fairview,
Joey’s Alumni (St. Joseph’s CBS Fairview Past Pupils’ Union) are running a major fundraising Golf Classic in Clontarf Golf Club on Friday, 22nd June 2018.
Format is four-person team event (more details on precise format to follow).
This fundraiser has been organised to support the school with provision of a much-needed Construction / Technology Studies Room on which work will commence this year for completion in 2019. Construction Studies introduces students to the knowledge and skills associated with construction technology and construction materials and practices. This new facility will enable the school to satisfy recognised student demand by adding to the curriculum a proven Leaving Cert (Ordinary & Higher Level) course that combines practical with academic learning. The school requires voluntary funding of €150,000 to supplement the approved Government Grant and previous personal donation of €85,000.

I’m David Rafferty, President of Joey’s Past Pupils’ Union (PPU).
In case you haven’t heard about it, I’m contacting you about Annual School Reunion dinner in Clontarf Castle on Friday, 23rd February 2018, Time: 7.30pm sharp, Price €50, payable at the door.
I also want to tell you about our desire to work together to build a mutually beneficial and sustainable Joey’s Past Pupils’ network.
Keeping people abreast with our activities is too big a job for a small voluntary committee, so we need to team up with as many past pupils as possible – “ní neart go cur le chéile”. We’ve now built a database of 4,000 past pupil names, with 800 email addresses and a further 200 telephone numbers – a good start from small beginnings. This email marks the start of using the database to support our extended PPU Team of “Year / Class Contacts” (48 and growing) and contains the seeds of a network that will be much more relevant to past pupil needs, be they social, career or business.
We depend on our class contacts for each Leaving Cert year to organise for their old school mates to attend the dinner, to liaise with us as regards numbers and as our primary channel of communication with Joeys Alumni. Names of class contacts are in the attached news update.
About myself, I was in class of 1966, worked as an accountant till I retired and was coaxed onto Joey’s PPU committee last year, following the successful organisation of our year’s 50th anniversary.
At my stage in life, what’s “in it for me” is keeping in touch with fellow 1966ers and working as part of an overall team to build a network to improve things for students past and present.
From contact with other Joey’s alumni, it is apparent that many share a desire to keep in touch or help out. The idea behind a more organised alumni network is to strengthen our ability to support one another in mutually advantageous ways. Just imagine a network that can be used for job contacts, for business mentoring, to bring together young people with business ideas and older investors (our own Dragon’s Den), or just simply to meet socially, support those in reduced circumstances, etc. The ingredients are all there – all we need to do is “join the dots” to make it happen!

St. Joseph’s CBS Past Pupils’ Union – News Update 15th January 2018
Hi Fellow Past Pupils and friends of Joeys,
The committee of the Past Pupils Union (PPU), in collaboration with school management, is concentrating on 2 key priorities:
- Assisting the school to maximise its role in the community it serves, now and for the foreseeable future.
- Engaging in the best way possible with Joey’s past pupils and friends to maximise mutually beneficial networking possibilities and keep you all up to date with developments.
Over the past decade, a much higher proportion of Joeys students than in earlier years hails from the Annesley Bridge to city centre community. As in the past, Joeys is keeping relevant to the needs of its current community and pupils. In common with other urban schools, Joeys comes within the Department of Education’s social inclusion strategy for Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools (DEIS) to help children and young people who are at risk of or who are experiencing educational disadvantage. This helps overcome some but not all barriers to equal education opportunities through additional funding, smaller class sizes, etc.
The activities and objectives of the PPU Committee (members listed below) for 2018 are as follows:
- Networking: 1st event is the Annual School Reunion dinner: Venue – Clontarf Castle, Date – Friday, 23rd February 2018, Time: 7.30pm sharp, price €50, payable at the door. As we are a small voluntary committee, we depend on class contacts for each Leaving Cert year to organise for their old school mates to attend and to liaise with us as regards numbers. Names of class contacts are in paragraph 6 below.
- Strategic Direction of the school – We have started working with industry, 3rd level and 2 other schools to develop and implement a course complementary to Leaving Cert. The model we are working on is about enabling students become both career and college-ready. The objective is to put students in the driver seat and for them to have the skills so that they’re in a position to choose. Do they want to go on and get that four-year degree? We will keep everyone posted on this new initiative, which is still at a very early stage of development.
- Fundraising:
- The 3 Funds currently supported by the PPU are:
- Building Fund: Current balance €60,000. Need an additional €100,000 to build new Construction / Technology Studies Room, for which conservation report has been accepted and is now going to planning stage. It is hoped that work will commence on this project in 2018 for completion in 2019.
- Evening Tuition Fund: To provide students with after-hours tuition in preparation for Leaving Cert. Need €10,000 per annum to support students for whom such additional studies would be otherwise unaffordable for their parents.
- College Scholarship Fund: To provide scholarships in the form of financial grants for students who are accepted into 3rd level and for whom this would be a great financial burden for their parents. Target €10,000 to cover next 2 years.
- Golf Classic: For the last number of years we have run a golf outing around about May each year, which has received good support. Given the new initiatives currently in hand, we feel the time is right to hold a Golf Classic in May 2018 in support of the above-mentioned funds. More about this will follow in the next PPU News Bulletin.
- PPU Annual Contribution Scheme: We will be launching this initiative as soon as possible whereby past pupils and friends will be asked to make an annual contribution of €35 (or more if they can afford it) to support the very deserving projects outlined above.

Death of Mr Richard Heneghan
Mr Richard Heneghan, former teacher in St Joseph’s died on Thursday 21/12/2017
He was born in Westport in 1932 and came to teach in St Joseph’s in 1963 and retired aged 65 in 1997 having spent 34 years teaching Accountancy and Business Studies. Prior to being a teacher Mr Heneghan served as a Garda Síochána in Cork City.

Indicative price €50 (to be confirmed). Now is the time to round up support among your former school
colleagues for this most enjoyable event. As we are a small voluntary committee, we depend on class contacts
for each Leaving Cert year to organise for their old school mates to attend. Do please advise

Fundraising:
The school has separate funds for Building, College Scholarship and Evening Tuition, from which students have benefited greatly over the years:
Building Fund:
The balance available in the Building Fund stands at €57,716 (19th December 2016). The school has been granted Department of Education and Skills funding of €302,000 to build a Technology / Construction Studies room. The estimated cost of completing the technology room, extra classroom and two resource rooms (including relocation of science lab) is €460,000. This leaves €158,000 to be found from our own resources or a net shortfall of €100,284, when the balance available of €57,716 is taken into account.
This amount has to be raised through the voluntary efforts of the school community – students, parents, staff and past pupils. Any help you can provide would be most welcome.
In November 2016 the Technology / Construction Room project received approval from the Department to proceed to planning stage and this will begin early in 2017.
Evening Tuition / College Scholarship Funds:
The balance available in these 2 funds stands at approx. €4,500. The PPU Committee is considering how these funds can be kept going and would welcome any assistance in this regard.

Joey’s Past Pupil Reunions are held at the end of February every year. With just months to go before our 50th anniversary of doing the Leaving, the “1967 group” below have started to work on contacting as many of our old class mates as we can to ask them if they would like to come to next year’s reunion dinner.
The problem is getting contact details – hence this post to enlist the help of anyone who knows guys who did the leaving in 1967 – whichever of the 3 classes they were in 6A (E), 6B (L) or 6C (S).

Death of Vincent Kenny
It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the death of Vincent Kenny. I first met Vincent when he was appointed President of the PPU in 2010, serving for two years and his verve, positivity and enthusiasm was compelling from the off and it was clear that he had never lost his great “grá” for Joeys despite leaving in 1968 following completion of his Leaving Certificate.
It was my great pleasure to have known him albeit for such a short period and I will always fondly remember my time working with Vincent. On behalf of the PPU and the wider Joey’s family I extend my sincere condolences to his wife Claire, daughters Lesley and Niamh and his extended family and friends.

Joey’s Past Pupil reunion dinners are held annually in Clontarf Castle on the last Friday in February. St. JOSEPH’S C.B.S. PAST PUPILS’ UNION
St. Joseph’s CBS Fairview (Joey’s) Past Pupils Union (PPU) was established in 1955 to maintain and develop links between Joey’s and past pupils of the school.
The purpose of the new PPU website is to keep all past pupils informed about PPU activities, events and notices and to provide you with a means by which you can interact with Joey’s past pupils online.

The annual PPU dinner was held in Clontarf Castle on Friday, 28th February 2015. Shane Conroy was awarded Student of the Year and Fr. Finbarr Neylon was awarded the Hall of Fame. PPU Golf Outing 2014

Where: Hollywood Lakes Golf Club
The event has proved to be a most enjoyable social gathering of past pupils, teaching staff and friends. With your continued support, and even through these lean years, the PPU have managed to keep the event going
The cost is € 60 per person (includes dinner and prizes) or € 35 for Hollywood Lake members.
The format for the day is for teams of 4 Players, with tee times as follows;
Afternoon 14:30 to 15:33
- Eight slots with four players per slot have been booked (32 Players)
- Places on booking sheet will be allocated on a first come basis.
- If you wish to play at a certain time we will try to facilitate you as best we can.
- A player may book a single, double, treble or one slot of four.

125 Commemoration Year Book
The 125 Commemoration Year Book contains a full history of St Joseph’s from its foundation in 1888 to 2013, and that history is presented through the use of an easily consulted timeline and through an extensive use of original pictures, many of which have never been seen publicly before.
There are articles by many past pupils plus interviews with present and past teachers, supplemented by interviews with pupils from every era. As sports is a highlight of any good school the 125 Year Book contains a substantial history of Joey’s exploits on the field of play which is lavishly illustrated with pictures of our sporting heroes down through the years.
This special 125 Commemorative Year Book is a “must buy” for all Past Pupils and is available from the school or via the PPU, cost € 10 plus Postage & Package (where applicable).

Annual Dinner 2014
The annual PPU dinner is being held in Clontarf Castle on Friday, 28th February 2014. The annual dinner is a unique gathering of past pupils in a relaxed and friendly setting. It is anticipated early next year we will be in a position to offer an automated booking and payment system.
The PPU It is looking for coordinators from each year group to work in publicising the dinner with their fellow past pupils to generate support and ensure a successful dinner for that year group attending. Anyone that is working on a group I would ask them to contact the PPU and inform them what year they are working on.

Building Project 2014
Joey’s is embarking on an ambitious building project in 2014 and for the first time ever the two school buildings will be connected. Three new classrooms, toilets and dressing rooms are to be built that will provide students with state-of-the-art learning facilities to explore and develop their creative talents, see attached drawings (the areas marked in red on the Architects drawings are the new buildings). Your support of this project will leave a lasting legacy for current and future generations of Joey’s students.
The Past Pupils Union along with the Parents Council, current students and the School Board have come together to drive the fund raising forward. The slogan for the project is “building on tradition – buy a brick for Joey’s.
The price of a brick is € 100 with the names of each contributor being displayed in the new reception area. Brothers, families or friends can come together to buy a brick.
For those still unsure where the new classrooms will be located, they are being built where the bike and smoking sheds once were (a long time ago). The changing rooms are being built onto the side of the physics lab.
Donations can be made as follows;
1. Cheque made payable to the “St. Joseph’s CBS (Secondary) Building Fund” and sent to the school.
2. Credit transfer or by a standing order/direct debit either in full or payable over 5 months.

3. By simply dropping into the school and making a cash donation.
Donations by (PAYE) individuals in excess of € 250 affords the school the opportunity to claim tax back, e.g. a donation of € 250 by an individual (PAYE) paying tax at 41% will result in the school being able to claim back from Revenue a further € 174, resulting in a total donation of € 424.
