The Science Department
All students in their first 3 years at Scóil Iosaif take Junior Cycle Science, then in 5th year, students have the option to study biology, physics and chemistry for their Leaving Certificate. Our goal is to develop students’ knowledge of and about Science, to deepen their skills of working scientifically and to make them more confident about using Science in their everyday lives. Students will study a wide variety of topics, complete projects and carry out many experiments to develop a sense of enjoyment for learning.
Students are given the ability to learn in a practical, hands-on environment. In science they are engaged, stimulated and want to learn as much as possible. Many of the skills students learn while studying science such as problem solving and investigation skills are very useful outside of school and will be of use in whatever job they choose to do.
Outside of the classroom, Science week occurs every year in November where we run competitions which involve projects and posters, quizzes, puzzles and guest speakers. Students have the opportunity to enter competitions such as the BT young scientist award.
Junior Cycle Science
Junior Cycle science allows students to explore science in the world around us. Junior Cycle Science covers 4 areas: Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space and Physics. Within Science classes students can work as part of a group, go on field trips, complete research projects, use a wide variety of IT resources and carry out experiments and investigations.
