Physics and Chemistry

If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.

Leaving Certificate Physics and Chemistry aim to stimulate and sustain learners’ interest in, and enjoyment of, the subjects while developing an understanding of the fundamental principles underlying chemical phenomena and physical scientific principles. Learners will use their knowledge and understanding of physics and chemistry to pose scientific questions, define scientific problems, and use scientific arguments and ideas to illustrate how humanity has benefited from the study and practice of the subjects.

At Leaving Certificate these subjects aim to give students an understanding of the fundamental principles of the sciences and their application to everyday life. It offers a general education in physics and chemistry to all students, enabling them to develop an understanding of the scientific method and their ability to observe, to think logically and to communicate effectively. Science technology and society (STS) is an integral part of the syllabus so that students can be aware of the principles of the applications of physics in the everyday world and how chemistry shapes and advances that world.

This syllabus is for students in the senior cycle of post-primary education and is assessed at Higher and Ordinary levels.
