The first years made the short journey to Coolock to compete in the city colleges’ first year hurling blitz during this term. Thirteen lads, who in the weeks previous had shown themselves to be talented hurlers, made the trip.
The day started well with a strong display and a narrow win over St. David’s. The match was closely contested and it took every bit of grit and determination to get through a stubborn David’s defense.
Hope began to soar among the team. But a brutish St. Aidin’s outfit quickly brought our lads back down to earth. With one game left in the group, a deep breath was taken, and the team steeled themselves for a group decider against the home team: Chanel.
With the weather improved and the sun finally shining on a cold day, the first years showed some great skill and impressive scoring. When the referee finally blew the whistle, it was Joey’s who were ahead!
It was an encouraging display, and players such as Daniel McCabe, Patick Ryan and Christian O’Brien showed that there is a promising future for the school’s hurling in the coming years.
